Behind the scenes: Banknotes reborn in first industrial scale BFE® cardboard production

Innovation is often a major jump forward - prepared by intense thought work and  many steps to create those break through results. Our Banknote Fiber Extractor was set up to proof that in the cash industry we can achieve sustainable solutions by repurposing banknotes in a perfectly circular way. And with the successful production of cardboard from BFE® Material, we have now achieved this major milestone.

To celebrate this break through moment we invite you to have a look behind the scenes at the first BFE® cardboard production at industrial scale.

Last inspections of Banknote Fiber material in it‘s raw state and ready to get to work.

While in theory decomposing cotton-based banknotes to single fibers should result in perfectly reusable material to create new products – it yet had to be shown in a working use case and at industrial scale.

We are happy to announce that this huge milestone has now been achieved due to the production of cardboard from banknote fiber material and waste paper.

The paper machine at the moment when BFE® fibers become new paper.

Together with Papierfabrik Meldorf and PTS – Institut für Fasern & Papier gGmbH we successfully completed our first real world use case to give banknotes decomposted by BFE® a new life.

Out of 4,5 tons of material our first production resulted in 15 tons of Testliner. The fiber material turned out to be of such good quality it exceeded not only all specification values but also the expected amount of cardbaord produced.

The successful BFE® production proves our commitment to deliver the first environmentally friendly circular solution for cotton-based banknotes by regaining the fibers and their valuable properties as a base material for multiple applications with our Banknote Fiber Extractor.

In the next weeks, the boxes produced from cardboard will be shipped to various customers as transport and storage mediums in the cash cycle. A big share will also be used internally for shipping G+D spare parts to the world.

“Thank you for the opportunity to prove that our high-quality waste can be the basis for great new products. A great step towards a sustainable future.”
Ria Petzold

“An exciting production with a great and professional team which ultimately led to a product that exceeded the requirements. Thank you for this opportunity to make the banknote cycle one step more sustainable!”
